The rural idyll that is Nunwick

Nunwick is a very pleasant place to play cricket. The club has made significant advances on and off the field in recent seasons and it is a pleasure to compete there in the Eden Valley League. The picturesque ground was surrounded by an electric fence that one of the home players was ensuring had been switched off before play got underway; although some current hairstyles do not require the assistance of an electric shock to give them life. Having said that I can think of a few players who would benefit from a few thousand volts.

Nunwick batted first and made 135 all out with Keith Richardson taking 3/15 from 10 overs and, at the other end of the age spectrum, young Matty Clark took 2/14 from 10 with his leg spin. Harry Garner also claimed three invaluable wickets while Laura Leyland was very tidy behind the stumps and took one excellent stand-up catch.

In reply the KCC professional’s son, Adam Hickey, aged 12, opened the batting with John Webster who has been around a little longer. They gave Keswick a positive start but as the innings developed the visitors fell behind the clock and runs required per over rose accordingly. In the final analysis, Matty Clark and Laura Leyland batted with confidence for Keswick and the team eventually settled for a draw on 102/9.

Despite two or three older campaigners this was largely a very young, enthusiastic Keswick team, who showed a lot of spirit and ability and played as team and thoroughly enjoyed their cricket. Unfortunately the 3rds do not have a game this weekend but are in action again on August 1 when they travel to Stainton 2nds in the Eden Valley League Division Three.
